Contributing to the DdO's Peace, Development: Community Peace Symposium goes to Mawab

MAWAB, Davao de Oro - With the goal of contributing to Davao de Oro's peace and development by empowering the youth as peace advocates and protecting them from armed struggle, a Community Peace Symposium (CPS) was conducted by the Youth for Peace Movement (YFPM) Mawab Chapter on December 12, 2021, at Sitio San Isidro, Barangay Nuevo Iloco, Mawab, Davao de Oro.

This community-based campaign evolved from the Online Kalinaw Talks organized by the YFPM Davao de Oro this year, to reach out the youth among far-flung barangays in the province that do not have access to the internet and are vulnerable from the Communist Terrorist Group.

With this year's theme, "Mithiing Kapayapaan, Sama-Samang Isakatuparan," the recent implementation of CPS in Mawab was participated by some 30 youth from the said barangay.

During the event, various topics on peacebuilding were discussed by the different speakers such as "Peace Security Situation of Davao de Oro" by SSG Abner C Abejuela from the 28th Infantry Battalion (IB), "Kasinatian of a Former Rebels" by Ka Sabros, and the "PLGU DdO's Peace Initiative: OPLAN PAGBABAGO" by Jess Elton Largado from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

The series of lectures was followed by an interactive open forum where the speakers catered various questions from the participants.

The youth of Sitio San Isidro also recited the Youth Manifesto of Peace, which is an oath to seal their strong commitment as new advocates of peace.

Meanwhile, the program was graced by the Municipal Youth Development Council (MYDC) Officer, Hon. Bob R. Mirasol; Sangguniang Kabataan Municipal Federarion (SKMF) President, Hon. Ricky John Coquilla; YFPM Mawab President, Ardie Louise Villapaz; SK Chairpersons from the different Barangays of Mawab; and personnel from the 28th IB.

The successful implementation of CPS was made possible through the support of the various peace partners such as the Provincial Local Government Unit (LGU) of Davao de Oro headed by the Gov. Jayvee Tyron Uy, Municipal LGU headed by Hon. Ruperto S. Gonzaga III, SKMF, MYDC, and 28IB.

As the country still faces the COVID-19 pandemic, safe and secure environment with all health and safety regulations were observed during the activity while all the facilitators and speakers are ensured to be fully vaccinated.
